Footprints is on the move! We’re thrilled to introduce one of our newest franchise owners, Michael Titus, who is bring our flooring franchise to Northern Indiana. 

Michael comes from a diverse professional background, spending a large portion of his career working mainly in manufacturing operations and industry control. After going to college at Purdue University pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering, Michael spent 9 years in the military before owning and managing his own business for 4 years. While he enjoyed working in manufacturing operations, Michael eventually realized his real passion lied in operations and working directly with customers.

While spending his time searching for new business opportunities, Michael discovered Footprints Floors. “I really liked the business model and everything that they had to say,” he expressed. “I kept digging into it and investigating, talking to different franchisees, and it just progressed from there.” From the start, our business model is what truly stood out for Michael. He claims “the most attractive part of the business model is how Footprints Floors utilizes different existing technologies to their advantage.”

As Michael continued to research our flooring franchise and whether he was good fit as an owner, he increasingly saw how joining the team was an opportunity of a lifetime. “This was everything that I was looking for. From the first view, I saw a very high level of potential,” Michael states. “The more I dug into it, the more education I did; I wasn’t disappointed – I felt stronger and stronger about it all the time. The more I talk about it, the more excited I get about.” What specifically stood out to Michael was our commitment to our customers. As someone who wanted to work more directly with the customer base, Michael sought out a business opportunity that allowed for him to establish strong relationships with his customers—and Footprints Floors provided exactly that. “The customer satisfaction and the utilization of existing technologies to their advantage really set Footprints apart from others. Michael knew he wanted to be a Footprints Floor franchise owner when he gained the opportunity to engage with current Footprints Floors owners on their personal experiences and how they started their journey. “A moment that really defined the turning point in moving forward with the franchise process was talking with current franchisees,” Michael said. “It was great to hear about the things they are working on, and how Footprints was working with them and helping them handle issues. This made it very encouraging.”

Although he wasn’t able to meet our founder Bryan Park and corporate team in person, Michael argues that the support and conversations over the phone furthered his excitement in getting involved with our flooring franchise. “[Bryan] is a very easy going individual who definitely knows his business. I liked everything he had to say, and it just got me more and more excited about the opportunity.” As a business individual who has researched numerous business and franchise opportunities with other companies in various other sectors, his experience with Footprints corporate team as well as current franchisees helped Michael realize that Footprints was the business opportunity that he had been looking for. 

“Everything that I’ve seen so far, I’ve been really excited about; I was looking for a reason to not be excited! I have been looking  for many years, and there are many franchises where I haven’t pulled the trigger. Everything that was said and offered, I really got excited about.”

As he prepares for the start of his franchise, Michael is most excited to experience the independence that comes with owning a Footprints Floors and being able to interact one-on-one with his customers. “I wanted to become an entrepreneur for the independence. It allows me to make decisions to influence others in a positive way, and lay out my own path as opposed to letting someone else do it for me,” Michael states. “[I’m most looking forward to] the opportunity to work with customers and help them achieve what they feel are their goals.”

We are extremely excited to welcome our newest franchise owner, Steve Smith, to Footprints Floors! Steve becomes the newest member of our floor franchise family as he is opening his own Footprints Floors in Mesa, Arizona.

Coming from a diverse background of professional experience, Steve has had established careers in everything ranging from sales management to being a high school teacher. But, like many of our Franchise Owners, Steve wanted to build a career that offered more independence as a working individual. Hence, he came across Footprints Floors “while searching for opportunities to gain more control of my future, over corporate positions.” When the chance to start his own business with our flooring franchise arose, he knew the opportunity matched his career needs. “I’ve always thought about becoming an entrepreneur […] but now, I knew it was doable.”

Steve found various reasons as to why Footprints Floors was the best fit for him, given the great number of other franchises that exist in the service industry. What really stood out to Steve, firstly, was our business model, specifically in regards to start-up costs and growth. “[There is] no inventory, a low cost start-up, a true focus on the customer experience, and the ability to grow at a rate that is comfortable for the business owner.” Looking to find a career that offered him increased jurisdiction, Steve found that these specific components of Footprints Floors perfectly fulfilled the gaps in his professional life that he sought to fill. 

Another aspect that distinguished our franchise from others for Steve was our staffing component. Unlike other businesses, such as those in the restaurant industry, Footprints Floors utilizes subcontractors, eliminating the need for extensive staffing. “Food and retail have the staffing component that adds a degree of difficulty in starting a new business,” Steve states. “I never wanted to hire a “start-up staff” on Day One, and feel the responsibility to them and their families, until I knew I had a good handle on my own business.” Steve found that removing the need to focus on staffing not only allowed for an easier launch for his business, but also helped keep that start-up cost low and easier to maintain.

Although Steve had various reasons for what drew him to Footprints Floors, attending Footprints Floors’ Discovery Day was what truly sealed the deal in deciding to open his own. Calling it the moment that cemented his decision, his meeting with founder Bryan Park made Steve realize that opening a Footprints Floors was the right move for him. His first, and greatest, impression of Bryan came from when he got to witness everything in action. “The best part was going into the field to see jobs in progress, and, later, watch Bryan himself do estimates. He connected with each customer on a personal level. He’s genuine, as is all of the staff.” Seeing how Bryan is still highly-engaged and hands-on in the business, Steve knew that the sincerity and authenticity of the corporate staff would translate into strong support for launching his own Footprints Floors. 

Along with meeting our founder, Steve also found our commitment to our customers’ satisfaction at Footprints Floors to be a crucial attribute in choosing to work with our floor franchise. “Footprints Floors has a unique culture of caring about the customer. So, what do the current numbers in the flooring industry look like, exactly?

As a trade association dedicated to representing all segments of the hardwood flooring industry, The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) surveyed their members to gauge the current and future state of the industry. In 2018, more than two-thirds of all of the participants — including manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and contractors— expect sales growth of at least 3 percent in 2019, with 22 percent expecting sales will grow significantly (8 percent or more). Regarding contractors specifically, over two-thirds expected wood flooring sales to show positive sales growth in 2019, as nearly 45 percent of NWFA contractors – the greatest percentage of the four groups surveyed – saw significant sales growth (more than 8 percent) in 2017. These numbers highlight just an example of the construction and remodeling markets booming across the country, with national forecasts echoing NWFA member sentiments, citing consumer confidence as one driver of demand.

The NWFA stated that the top opportunities for flooring contractors going into 2019 include expanding in pre-finished flooring and other flooring surfaces; establishing new lines of business, such as flooring maintenance programs; selling more high-end products; and raising prices. Other contractors are also looking to work with new customer types, such as architects and designers.

It is also important to note the improvements found within the real estate, housing construction, and home improvement markets themselves to see how their influence impacts the success of the flooring industry.

Firstly, The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) expects consumer demand for single-family housing to grow as the overall economy and labor market continues to strengthen. The real estate market and flooring industry are closely correlated;  as an increasing number of more valuable homes are built across the nation, flooring installation will also increase proportionally to meet the flooring demands of these new homeowners. As the value of residential construction improves, more homes will be built and maintained, which will also create demand for flooring installation. The value of residential construction is expected to increase through 2019, thus presenting another potential opportunity for the industry.

And people are not just buying new homes. In recent years, spending within the home improvement industry has increased tremendously, leading to an increase in flooring renovation and restoration services. In regards to the home improvement industry, The Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity (LIRA), published by The Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University, estimated annual spending on residential improvements and repairs by homeowners to reach $350 billion by July 2019. Home improvement spending nationwide is now rising at nearly six percent annually, according to the Leading Index for Remodeling Activity. Three years ago, the annual growth was less than 6 percent. Why the change? One big reason: Homeowner equity. In the past few years, the US has seen an addition of 6 trillion dollars in homeowner equity, which has allowed homeowners to possess the confidence and means to tackle the multiple repairs and upgrades they had put off during, and years after, the recession in 2008. And not only that, homeowners have embarked on tackling larger home improvement projects, instead of sticking to necessary maintenance. For example, homeowners spent an average of nearly $2,000 more on home improvement projects in 2016 than in comparison to 2015.
